Flexible fingerprint sensors
Flexible fingerprint sensors enable fingerprint and vein imaging in new form factors not achievable with silicon chips.
The growing need for improved security and user-friendly authentication methods is driving an increased adoption of fingerprint readers across banking, consumer electronics, healthcare and border control. Research reveals that fingerprint readers are going to be the dominant biometric technology due to their high accuracy and ease of use.
Building on its industrially proven and low-cost organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) technology, FlexEnable has developed a flexible fingerprint sensor that brings a step change to where and how biometrics can be used in our lives.
FlexEnable’s OTFTs can be combined with organic photodiodes (OPDs) to create small and large area flexible optical sensors that can be used to image both fingerprints and veins. Our optical sensor is the only flexible sensor technology that has achieved 500 dots per inch (dpi) image resolution making it suitable for applications requiring standard-compliant fingerprint enrolment and identification. It can be paired with any end-user software to create low false acceptance (FAR) and rejection rates (FRR).
With a thickness less than 0.3 mm, the optical fingerprint sensors come in two sizes: 1” x 2” and 3” x 3.2” and. The 1” x 2”sensors can be used for integration in smartcards or mobile phones. The 3” x 3.2” sensors are suitable for optical fingerprint and vein scanners for border control or applications that require multi-finger verification. The sensors are suitable for FBI certification.
Adding value to biometric applications
FlexEnable’s unique technology enables high pixel density on low cost plastic substrates. The large area capability and flexibility means that entire surfaces can provide identification. From smart cards to car door handles and even steering wheels, almost any surface can be made smart enough to identify the user.
Benefits of integrating our flexible fingerprint sensor into products:
- Thin, light and robust
- Conformable over the surfaces in our daily lives
- High sensitivity compared with capacitive fingerprint sensors
- Vein sensing capability
- The large area allows more reliability and quicker detection
- The image can be taken in one shot as the sensor can be conformed to the finger
- Removes the need for glass optics used in conventional fingerprint scanners resulting in less bulky units
- Capable of multi-spectral imaging, making it less susceptible to contaminants, improper contact or bright ambient lights
Typical applications and markets
FlexEnable’s fingerprint sensor technology can be used in various biometric applications including:
- Law enforcement and border control
- Banking and smartcards
- Point of sale
- Health cards
- Mobile devices
FlexEnable is able to provide standard evaluation kits or design bespoke optical sensors for customers who wish to integrate them into their products. We are also interested in partnering with companies for sensor module development.
